Loads of fun cultural activities on this weekend! First up, on Sunday there is Diwali on the Square. According to the Yelp listing:
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated annually in London’s Trafalgar Square with fun for all the family, including music, dancing and magical light displays. Diwali has religious significance for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. Diwali is celebrated by many communities across London, but the biggest party of all takes place in Trafalgar Square.
Last year’s Diwali on the Square attracted around 25,000 people to central London. The colourful event saw Trafalgar Square transformed with floating lanterns, storytelling, displays and live performances. The Diwali celebrations are a fantastic opportunity to find out more about London’s diverse cultures. You can even have a go at learning some traditional dance moves!
Also on Sunday is the Covent Garden Punch & Judy Festival. Time Out London says:
Punch and Judy shows performed all day in the North Hall by members of the Punch and Judy Fellowship. The festival is designed to increase our appreciation of England’s archetypal bad boy and his longsuffering family and the setting is particularly apt because it was near St Paul’s Church in Covent Garden that the diarist Samuel Pepys recorded his first sighting of the puppet show, in 1662.
I also got a tip from a reader about an event kicking off this weekend called Wish You Were Here that will celebrate New York fashion and food in London’s Newburgh Quarter. I’m told that there will be free bagels and blueberry muffins on Saturday from 11-1. I think this sounds like it could be a lot of fun for older kids. Here is the scoop:
Throughout the month of October, visitors to the Newburgh Quarter will be treated to a New York experience, including a slice of the Big Apple street market with bagels, pretzels and New York style specialties. Other events include a ‘guerrilla’ street fashion show, a shopping evening and a Halloween party which will celebrate the arguably quintessential American occasion – but of course with an edgy difference. Live street performances, in-shop entertainment and New Yorker style fancy dress. Fierce!
Have a great weekend everyone!
