I’ve been inspired a lot by the personal finance bloggers I read lately. At the moment I’m looking at you, Holly, because your 100 Items Declutter is EXACTLY what I need.
I did a life-changingly thorough clear-out when I moved to London nearly two years ago and a fairly decent sort-through when E and I moved in together in February but now I find myself surrounded by clutter and lots of, well, things. Especially since coming home from BlogHer, where I was lucky enough to receive piles of freebies. Literally. Piles.
When we get cluttered I get anxious. I feel I can’t sit and relax, I can’t work on this blog, I can’t start up a new sewing project. This weekend is our first weekend free of visitors, travel, work, weddings, etc. in months so I’m determined to get us sorted. Our place has odd storage spaces and I need to make them work. And get rid of what doesn’t work.
I once saw an Oprah in which Suze Orman declared that people in debt have messy homes. And I don’t want to be those people! When I look around at piles of magazines, toys, computer wires, shoes, misc skincare products, I feel out of control and it’s not pretty.
So Friday is here and the weekend is looking wide open for a decluttering mission. Here’s to a productive weekend!

Well what do you know – it’s National Allotments Week! The event runs from 9 – 16 August and is put on by the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners.
I discovered this somewhere around the blogs so I went to check it out yesterday. I quite fancy the idea of an allotment. We moved into a flat in February with no outdoor space whatsoever and although we’ve attempted growing some herbs and chilies in our kitchen, it’s just not the same as having a proper garden. I’d really like to try growing veg! Plus kids just naturally seem to love gardening and it is so valuable for them to see where food comes from.
So, excited by National Allotments Week, I promptly got on the intrawebs and found my nearest allotments which are in a fancy part of Hampstead. They are surprisingly budget-friendly and I asked to be put on the waiting list (they all have a waiting list, wouldn’t you know). But then I got a sad note saying they’d actually completely closed even the waiting list earlier this year because 40 people were waiting. The next closest allotments, in the next borough over, have waitlists too but I admit I’ve become a bit demotivated.
However, dreaming of my very own patch of land in London and growing my own fruit and veg like some sort of domestic goddess got me inspired enough to do the next best thing and sign up for Abel & Cole’s weekly fruit & veg box deliveries. I’ve heard they are very good. I’m just hoping I didn’t get us in over our heads with the £15.95 box – that’s seven seasonal vegetables with potatoes and three fruits every week!
If you’re keen to sign up with Abel & Cole, I searched high and low for a voucher code but came up empty handed. They do promise that if you order a weekly box of summer fruit & veg you’ll automatically get the fourth free.
As for National Allotments Week, the idea is to “to promote the awareness and availability of allotments both locally and nationally and to show the public and the local authorities the strength of support and interest for the heritage of allotment culture.” Unfortunately I can’t see any actual events or activities listed on the site.
Do YOU have an allotment or a proper garden? Soooo jealous!

Guest post by Drew Davies at Big Yellow Self Storage
Space is never more at a premium than when a baby is on the way, but most of us hoard our belongings so de-cluttering to make room for the new addition to the family can feel like a Herculean task. Putting your things in self storage can help create that much needed space without throwing things out you might need later. And by following these storage tips, you’ll have a clutter free home in no time.
Size is everything
First up, make a list of the items and then group them according to how you will organise them. Start by identifying items that will be packed in boxes and stacked, then prioritise boxed items you will want to access most frequently.
Divide by fragility or weight, as heavier (make sure you have someone to do the heavy lifting if you’re expecting), sturdier items should be stored on the bottom of stacked items with fragile items on top. Then consider awkwardly-sized items that won’t stack well, including how often you will need to use them, and how heavy they are.
Storing Books
Books can be surprisingly heavy if too many of them are stacked together so the best way to pack these is to use small boxes for efficient use of the self storage space. Stack smaller books over larger books and make sure that they’re arranged horizontally (never vertically) because it can damage the spine.
Storing Clothing
Clothing should be stored in wardrobe boxes, on hangers, to retain their original shapes. Keep out of season clothes accessible, as you may need to store your clothing for longer than anticipated. Finally, place some moth balls inside the boxes where you store your clothes to prevent any damage.
Storing Mattresses
If you’re turning your spare bedroom into a nursery, you may want to store a mattress or two. Wrap your mattresses in the special bags available at most supermarkets and DIY stores. These not only prevent them from losing shape but protect them from absorbing moisture as well. If you store it for longer than a year, change the plastic covering once annually.
Writing on All Sides
Write down what each box contains and to what kind of room it belongs. Don’t just write it on one side, as sometimes it may be stacked in such a way that your label will be hidden from view.
And there you have it – everything packed up and stored!
